I have never felt so conflicted in my life.

Frantically searching for his keys, Darius’s heart speeds up!
“Shit! Where are my keys?” Struggling to hold the bouquet of roses and wine, he finally grabs the rainbow flag keychange deep in the pockets of his bag. He takes a moment. After a few seconds of inhaling and exhaling, he slowly inserts the key and opens the door.
“SUPRISE!!!”
Bright sparkling lights, rainbow colored penis balloons, and friends flooded his apartment. Every single person of special significance in to Darius who lived in DC was standing before him: gay, straight, black, white, young, and old. But dead center, Darius’s beautiful chocolate prince stood center with a smile so full of joy that it almost made time stop.
Much to Darius’s surprise, his partner had planned a party to celebrate their 5 year anniversary. And as Darius will soon find out, much more.
Some would describe Darius and his partner as the future reigning Prince pairing who will rule of all of Africa by 2050. This young couple met in grad school. By day, Darius spent his time as a trans person of color to advocate with other trans people of color with the Human Rights Campaign. His partner similarly did the same but in the corporate field. Their lives could not have been more perfect, both professionally and romantically. Today could not have been more perfect for their lives, both professionally and romantically.

After a few shots and slices of chocolate dick cake, because why not, Darius’s partner declared the room’s attention for an announcement.
“Darius, they say all men are created equal, but I disagree. And I’m sure you will too. Hell--we’re black!”
The room breaks out into laughter.
“But what I think rings more true is that all men who love their fellow man create equals. Equal opportunities. An equal balance in life. Equal efforts to love. I love that you have loved me equally as I have you. And because of your hard work for equality...for me and you and everyone else in this room, I want you and I to equal happiness for eternity. Darius, will you marry me?”

Darius and his partner goofily chase each other around the apartment in bliss. He said yes.
“Hey babe! Let’s go for a walk around the block? It’s so nice out!” asks his partner.
“Can we do it in our night pj’s? I don’t want to tear any more fabric of this great nation, hahaha! Also, I’m too fucking lazy.”
Hand in hand, the carefree and newly engaged couple walked out of their apartment complex for what would be a walk they would forever remember.

“You see that car following us?” his partner mumbled nervously?
“Relax! They’re just checking out our cute pajamas. We’re fine.” said Darius
The car sped up beside the two and inside was a young male who had only one thing to say and one thing to do which equaled to this, “GO HOME! YOU FUCKING FAGGOT-NIGGERS DISGUST ME!”

Darius and his partner lost their lives to the hands of yet another racist and homophobic hate crime. On June 26th, 2015 when the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was a legal right was the beginning and end of their happy life.
It is so beautiful that so many in the LGBT community can now marry the one’s they love, but the fight has just begun. #BlackLivesMatter #TransLivesMatter
